Cabbage Patch Kids

Cabbage Patch Kids

Students in Third Grade at St. John's, Alden received a free cabbage plant from Bonnie Plants in April. The President and CEO of Bonnie Plants, Stan Cope, states, "The joy of gardening and the satisfaction of growing healthy food are gifts kids never outgrow. We're grateful for the opportunity to share these gifts with the next generation of gardeners."  After carefully caring for his plant all summer, a photo of Brandon's 9 lb. cabbage was submitted to be included in a random drawing for a $1,000 scholarship and statewide recognition.  Good luck!

21st Century Learning at St. John's School

As a continuous effort to enhance student learning of 21st century skills and as a commitment to STREAM, St. John’s in Alden has invested in Chromebooks to compliment their existing technology. The Chromebooks will be assigned to every 5th thru 8th grade student. The Google Classroom app will be used to receive and submit assignments, take practice tests, share ideas and communicate with teachers and other students regarding schoolwork. They will have easy access to word processors, presentation tools, and numerous educational applications. Students can also reference the internet for research and informational purposes. Additionally, while the Chromebooks remain at school at the end of the day, students can submit homework and continue to access the school day’s materials from home, thanks to working in “the Cloud.”

4th grade students will each be assigned an iPad and the lower grades will use i Pads for some centers.

The 2016-2017 School Year Begins!

St. John the Baptist School is excited about the start of the 2016-2017 school year. On Wednesday, September 7th we welcomed back both returning and new teachers as well as faculty, staff and students.  We are very excited about continuing our STREAM program here at St. Johns. STREAM refers to Science, Technology, Religion, Engineering, the Arts and Mathematics with the focus being on creativity, complex thinking and fun. Various grades will be working with the following Stream Modules: PEAP (Primary Engineering Adventure Program), Arcade Academy, Invention Convention, Kitchen Chemistry and Robotics. Teachers and students are eager to begin this interactive program which will help them to integrate all these areas of learning into the curriculum. Students will learn how to work together to accomplish their goal. These projects will become a part of our Exhibition Night. This year we will continue our Character Council program here at St. John's. We are thrilled to announce that our Pre-K 4 class is at full capacity this year and currently has a waiting list.

St. John the Baptist School

The Start of Something Great!

St. John the Baptist School was founded in 1853 to meet the needs of a growing community with the belief that Gospel values are an important ingredient in a child’s education. The mission statement of St. John the Baptist School, guided by the principles of Christianity and the teachings of Jesus Christ, provides high quality academic education within the context of a faith-based environment, allowing each student the opportunity to reach his/her fullest potential academically, morally, socially and spiritually. We celebrate our Catholic identity and believe it to be a key ingredient in shaping students to become moral, ethical, and social beings, able to make a positive contribution to our ever-changing world. We provide a loving yet disciplined environment, conducive to learning. We recognize the individuality in each student, encourage them to develop their special talents and teach respect for others’ differences and unique views. We recognize that education is the shared responsibility of professional educators, the family and the community at large. We actively seek the participation of each group in the school’s developmental process. As a respected member of our community, we recognize our obligation to operate in a sound and responsible manner.

St. John’s School is accepting students in Pre - K 3 & 4, full day Kindergarten through Grade 8. Small class sizes offer our students the advantage of individual attention. In addition to the core academic subjects we offer Physical Education, Computer/Technology, Library, Art, Music and Spanish. Students with special needs receive Remedial Reading and Remedial Math through St. John the Baptist School and Resource Room and Speech Services through the Public School District. St. John’s offers a variety of After School Clubs such as Art, Volunteer Club, Yearbook and School Newspaper. We offer a wide variety of sports for students to participate in. Some of these sports include basketball, volleyball, soccer, softball, as well as a seasonal Swimming Program. St. John’s participates in the Federal Hot Lunch Program and offers a delicious hot lunch to its students each day. An After School Care Program is offered to our students from 2:00  p.m. – 5:30 p.m. each school day with homework time, free time, snack time, arts and crafts, and activity time. Other enrichment activities our students participate in each year include a Exhibition Night, Christmas Program, and a Elementary Spring Concert & the Diocesan Art Show.  We have an outdoor playground, basketball court, baseball field and additional green space.
