Common Core at St John's

The seventh grade class, at St. John the Baptist, recently completed the module released by engageNY called, “Journeys and Survival”. Throughout the module we read the anchor text, A Long Walk to Water. This book discussed the hardships that Southern Sudanese people face in their everyday lives. We were able to sympathize with the situation in Sudan through the accounts of the two main characters in the book. We learned, as we progressed through the text, that one of the characters is a real person. The information in Salva’s stories left us with hope. This hope grew into motivation, especially after we finished the novel and learned more about Salva’s non-for-profit organization called “Water for South Sudan”. After being inspired by Salva’s dedication and perseverance, the students in the seventh grade class felt a need to give back.

They also explored what would happen to the light bulbs in their circuits if they added more batteries and light bulbs. Pictured are the students creating their parallel circuits.
